So we were sitting as a family in Sam’s therapist’s office. It seems as though there has been a break down in communication within our family. The solution? Homework. As Miss Sam said ‘That Nelle (the therapist) is a tricky one’.
Our homework? Spend time together as a family. Has anyone tried to do this with a teenager??? And while spending time together as a family, we need to communicate through dialogues not monologues. I ask again. Has anyone tried to do this with a teenager????
So while in the therapist’s office we were attempting to target some activities that we could enjoy together as a family with minimal conflict.
As the therapist began to put ideas out there she asked:
“Do you play cards?”
Miss Sam’s quick witted reply:
“Do scratch cards count?”

My teenage daughter and I like to make birthday cards (Stamping). We are actually doing a stamping party together next month. It does feel pretty good when your teenage daughter finds interest in the same things as you. We also like to take pictures.
Scratch cards!? That is hilarious! As my teens get older, it’s just finding time to BE together as a family. We’ve spent more time as a whole since the oldest one left for college (home on breaks) than we did during her entire senior year in high school. Good luck!
Hee! hee! Funny girl!
LOL!!!
my anti spam word is “shop” … but i don’t think that would promote positive family communication
gaw-ash … are you learning some good counseling techniques?!!!
Activities to do with a teenager: Baking, Cooking & Cleaning while listening to music and engaging in conversation. It doesn’t sound like fun, does it? But oh, it was!! I used to do this all the time with my niece, Miss Jen. We had a blast! Plus she learned: to appreciate home-made cooking, exploring new recipes and shopping for the special ingredients, she experienced the pure joy and satifaction of the fruits of her own labor and we spent quality time together. Dancing like carefree idiots and kitchen floor picnics with popsicles occured quite often. I highly recommend it to anyone. Side bonuses… a very clean house and home-cooked meals.
That was so funny I snorted my soda.
Hey, Danielle! I just wanted you to know that I mentioned you in my blog post. You can see it here: http://tinyurl.com/yoq72j
Too funny. Why is it that we think we are having a nice converation with our teens, but they feel it is an interrogation? I asked an innocent question at dinner last night and it turned into world war III. What about a photography class since she enjoys it too? And you could count it as an elective in the non school.
