When Mom Can’t Teach, Teach Thyself

Photobucket

For several months Miss Sam has nagged me beyond sanity to help her learn how to make an animated video. Considering that I have zero experience in this venue I delayed her requests with ‘wait until we get you a new computer with more capacity’. Well her thirteenth birthday arrived with the much anticipated ‘new computer’.

Yet, there was no pressure on me to help her with learning how to create an animated video for You-Tube.

While visiting friends in Safety Harbor, Miss Sam and I engaged in a conversation with a young man fishing on the pier. During this conversation he suggested several ways to create an animated video. Although much of this conversation was beyond my comprehension, it appears that it was enough to motivate Miss Sam.

Armed with the suggestions of the helpful young man and information gleaned from online friends, Miss Sam taught herself how to use Microsoft Paint/Paint Shop Pro X/Microsoft Movie Maker to create the following. It is an audition for a part in a Warriors You-Tube feature video.

And to further embaress myself, I am unable to embed the video (to size) in this post. So please take the time to link here to

Oh, I know just what you mean! My 7yo and 12yo both can make animated videos and know how to do the whole you tube thing as well…I’m lucky if I get the “anti-spam” letters on a comment page the first time lol! Thanks for sharing your highlight and the video. Have a great week.

    Yay for Ms. Sam!!!

Kids can learn anything they need to learn if they feel the desire or the need. It’s all about the motivation. :-)

My DS 3 taught himself so much in this arena. I figure it’s like giving an artist a canvas and a palette. How exciting.

That’s great! It is funny that you posted this today because I was just watching YouTube with the Certain Little Boy this morning. I was thinking how happy I was that he couldn’t make a video yet!

I love it when kids take the initiative to teach themselves.

    Way to go Miss sam!

Great start. The most important thing a child can learn is how to learn everything else is not that important if they are not interested anyway.

When we visited Disneyland (the trip before Disneyworld) there was a cartooning school for children which my three signed up for. It was only a day school but it inspired my eldest who is now doing it full time. You may want to see if Disneyworld offers anything and if they have anything they can send out to you perhaps to do at home. Just a thought

I watched the You Tube video. How exciting that she taught herself how to use all of those programs. Those are some great skills that she is developing. My 14-year-old son has helped me so much with my blog. He even did the Hi-Light Meme Graphic and set up the Mr. Linky. I think that he will probably have a career in computers.

Good job, Sam! Don’t you just love it when they are so interested in something that they’re willing to learn about it on their own?
