Quick! It’s an emergency! You just got an urgent call about a family emergency and had to rush to the airport with barely time to grab your wallet and your passport. But now, you’re stuck at the airport with nothing to read. What do you do??
My first reaction was……this is a no brainer. I would definitely buy an overpriced book that was big and thick so I could fool myself into thinking I was getting my money’s worth.
However, a similar scenario recently played out only it was the hospital and not the airport. I found myself walking the corridors for exercise while waiting and ended up in what is called the ‘atrium’. There was a cart there from the gift shop. I don’t understand the attraction, but I am constantly drawn to those ‘large print’ crossword books. I bought the crossword book. As I was getting out my money I noticed the container of newly sharpened yellow no. 2 pencils. As much an attraction as the crossword puzzle books. I had to have a new pencil to go with my new crossword puzzle book.
I don’t know why I make these purchases when I am in a ‘tight’ spot with no book to read. I can’t do crossword puzzles. I have never been able to complete a crossword puzzle. Crossword puzzles give me major migraines. And I have a drawer full of pencils.
Go figure.

What is it about impulse buying that strikes a chord with all of us? I’ve been there, done that and can totally relate.
Hugs,
Holly
I’d do the very same thing…except that I’d do the crossword puzzles…I’m a crossword addict. Plus, I challenge myself to never do one with a pencil…it must be with a pen.
I’d probably try to convince myself that I really should buy a book, but when I’m waiting - whether in an airport or in a hospital - I’m too easily distracted and would never get past the first couple of pages. Therefore, the crossword puzzle book wins out!
That is a no-brainer for me… I’d just buy whatever book is next on my ‘to read’ list, or anyone that has a fun look to the cover. I have several of those crossword books, they are great for my insomnia. =)
I’m impulsive, too! And there’s something so beautiful about trivial little luxuries! (excluding the headaches, of course…)
I’m a major worrier. I would probably buy an antacid.
I’m also an artist of sorts, so if the emergency wasn’t life threatening (our last few were) I would draw. As long as I have a paper and pencil, I’m good to go.
Danielle,
I’ve always loved crosswords–though I’m so busy these days, I don’t seem to be able to find the time to do them. I’ve found, though, that they’re so much easier to complete when done with someone else–or better still, more than one someone. That way, when I’m stumped for a word, I can look to my crossword puzzle buddy to help me out. It usually works great!
Take care!
