I’m Taking Art Lessons

My online BFF Heather is giving art lessons. The art lessons are online and absolutely free. And she promises to keep it simple, simple, simple. Simple is what I need.

For our first lesson, Heather has asked us to:

Get your drawing pad and a pencil. At the first new page, draw a picture of a person from your head, the way you think a person looks.

Here was my problem. When I pick up a pad and pencil with the intent to draw - I draw nothing but a blank. I have no vision. I have no idea. It’s like my brain says ‘Draw a person? What is a person?’.

To overcome this initial ‘artist’s block’ I changed the rules a little. (As many of you already know, it’s what I do best - grin). I decided to attempt to draw one of my most favorite sculptures ever - The Savannah Bird Girl.

When I lived in Georgia I was always drawn (get it???) to Savannah and the antique shops that overpopulate the riverwalk. You could find me there most every other weekend shopping and walking along the river.

But let’s get out of the past and move to the present shall we. It’s like I am avoiding presenting you my version of the Savannah Bird Girl and my first ever attempt at putting pencil to paper to DRAW something.

So here it is. My first drawing. My first assignment.

I am going to stay committed to this. I have had a lifetime aversion to drawing. It began with coloring books and crayons. I never liked them. One of the greatest things my mom ever did was to sit and draw and color with Miss Sam. It was the one thing I was unable to immerse myself in when it came to quality time with my daughter.

I remember when she was little and she would ask me to draw ________(fill in the blank with ANYTHING) and I would say what no mother should ever say (as we tell our kids to never say it) “I can’t”. There were times when my hard headed little girl would push and push and push and I would reluctantly give it a shot. I often wonder where she got her awesome talent as an artist - especially having a mom afraid of crayons.

So please stay tuned for Heather’s Lesson Number Two!!! It is sure to be a step forward toward conquering my fear of crayons art pencils and drawing paper.

If it is any comfort as all I HATE coloring books and crayons and would never have had them in the house if my mother and mother-in-law hadn’t bought them. It looks like Sam’s manga style is creeping in here–the face is wonderful.

Hmmmmm…I may have to try this out if I find time later today. Oh, Danielle…some of the sweetest hours spent with my daughter in her early childhood were the hours spent coloring in her color books together! I found it sooooooo relaxing. With my son, it was building stuff with Legos. I’d forgotten about coloring ’til you mentioned it!

Great Job!!! And what a great first pic. Savannah is our home away from home. We got married there, my in-laws live there, we honeymooned there, Cali celebrates her birthday there every year.

I’m sure you’ve already read the book, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”….but if you ever get the chance the Savannah tour about that story is incredible.

    Keep up the good work!

It is something that makes us so vulnerable, isn’t it? I think it’s great that you’re going to do this. I can’t wait to see the journey.

What a neat hobby to get into and skill to develop. That’s a great thing to do with your daughter.
