You would never know that this is one of my most favorite reading challenges, considering I am a month late in participating. However, if you love to read and have never visited Joy’s blog Thoughts of Joy, you are so missing out on some very special joys (grin) in your reading day. Joy has provided so much information about books that not only she reads, but others have read, that the posts and lists I find over there keep me avoiding that feeling that every bibliophile hates – not having a book to read.
So without further ado here is my Non-Fiction Five Challenge reading list (although I missed May, I am still going to list five and play catch up):
- Healing ADD: The Breakthrough Program That Allows You to See and Heal the Six Types of ADD by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. I am currently reading this book and it is absolutely amazing. As a clinician I adhere to the theory that the brain is the basis of all our behaviors. I believe we are who we are more because of nature than nurture. Therefore I am always fascinated by books that explore the uncharted territories of the brain like this one does in regards to ADD. I am also looking forward to reading the book Change Your Brain, Change Your Life by Daniel G. Amen, M.D.
- The Prince of Frogtown by Rick Bragg. I am a big fan of Rick Bragg. His book, It’s All Over But the Shoutin’ was a ‘hard to put down’ reading experience for me. His books are raw with honest emotion and at times humorous twists. Much like another one of my favorite authors Augusten Burroughs.
- Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller. I thoroughly enjoyed his book Blue Like Jazz. This particular book caused quite a bit of controversy throughout the Christian community. You can read my review of Blue Like Jazz here. I am looking forward to reading Searching for God Knows What and I also have his other book Through Painted Deserts on my bookshelf waiting to be explored.
- Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. This book has been on my ‘to be read’ shelf for over a year now. Every time I see him on ESPN (he is a sports reporter) I think to myself, I really need to read that book about Morrie. Joy has asked us to step out of our ‘non-fiction comfort zone’ this time around so I will give this one a shot.
- The Ride of Our Lives by Mike Leonard. I have been wanting to read this book since it came out in paperback. I must admit I was drawn to the cover as I passed by the ‘New in Paperback’ table at Barnes and Noble a year or so ago. It has been on my Paperback Swap wishlist for some time and recently became available. Of course I hit the ‘Please Send’ button. It is now on my ‘to be read’ shelf just waiting for this challenge.
What do you have planned for your summer reading??
You can check out other books I have read here and ‘my to read’ list here.
As Joy would say: Happy Reading!!

YAY! It’s official now.
Welcome to the Non-Fiction Five Challenge! It’s great to see your list, Danielle. I loved Tuesdays with Morrie. I’m so glad that’s one of your choices and I can’t wait to see what you think.
I hope you review the Donald Miller book. I also liked Blue Like Jazz overall. It really stretched my thinking.
Thanks so much for sharing. Your first listing is just the kind of thing I was looking for today!
Hugs,
Holly
Hey I am reading Prince of Frogtown, too. In between readings of Dreams From My Father. Boy are they different, but similiar, too. I love biography!
I came across “The Ride of Our Lives” on Amazon, looks really great. Right now I am finishing up on Chinese History non-fiction called “Return to
Middle Kingdom”. A most fascninating read. Thanks for the list!
I suggest reading “Whose Child Is This” if you have daddy or mommy issues. Thanks for your blog I find it encouraging every time I read it!
