My Daybook ~ September 22

Outside My Window…it’s overcast. A perfect day to plant the caladiums I bought this weekend. I love these flowers. They are bulbs so they come back double in size every year. They were way too expensive over the summer but have come down to $1.49 each.

I am thankful that…the fall weather is finally making an appearance. Of course here in Florida that means temperatures in the nineties will dip down into the most refreshing eighties. We will graciously accept the gentle breezes that these dips in temperatures bring with them.

From the kitchen…to welcome fall I am actually making some pumpkin bread this morning. Okay, y’all can just pick yourself up off the floor from the dead faint the idea of me cooking swooned you into.

I am wearing…the usual but am thinking about whether to wear my puppy designer jeans today or my regular boring jeans.

I am creating…a memorial scrapbook to honor my father-in-law. I took some photos at the cemetery this weekend that came out quite well.

From the learning rooms…Miss Sam wrote her first book report ever (can you believe that she never had to do one while in public school??) She did an awesome job. Her writing abilities have never been an academic concern for me. She has several ‘books’ that she is working on and drawing the characters for. I wish I could figure out how to encourage more of this without ‘pushing’? Any suggestions Heather?

I am going…to re-rent and eventually purchase the original movie ‘Sybil’. I was unable (due to time constraints as the movie is three hours long) to let one of my classes finish viewing it. However, we took a vote last week and the entire class would like to finish it. This will put my lecture schedule behind but what the heck.

I am reading…nothing. I am in between books at the moment. I was beginning to read Danielle Steele’s book Rogue but my interest lagged by about the third page. I did however, just finish reading an absolutely awesome non-fiction book titled ‘In His Sights’: A True Story of Love and Obsession by Kate Brennan.

I am hoping…to unpack the six Rubbermaid bins that we were able to take down from the attic this weekend. They are marked ‘Halloween’, ‘Thanksgiving’ and ‘Fall’.

Around the house…when it gets a little ‘cool’ I tend to focus more on the outside of the house than the inside. The front garden needs to be trimmed back. I need to order some hay bales for the fall decorating that I am just itching to ‘fall’ into (grin). And my fall flowers need to be planted. The inside of the house? Well at the moment it is going to hell in a hand basket but at least we have paper plates and I did manage to do laundry this weekend. Except for Miss Sam’s laundry. She does her own and by the looks of her hamper she will have to go naked today.

One of my favorite things…is (no surprise here) photography. I have made an extra effort this week to get back into the habit of taking my camera everywhere. Here is an interesting shot I captured this weekend on the side of a church:

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week: It’s a busy week once again. Full of appointments. One is for Miss Sam. She has a cavity which is going to cost $300 to fill (eek!!!) so that means a pit stop to see if my counseling check has come in!!!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing

I was thinking of you as I read the book Laurel sent me. I think I will pass it to you when I am done.

If you want to encourage Sam, take it seriously. Treat her writing as you would the work of an adult you are friends with and want to encourage. If she is writing anyway then why bother making her do book reports? The only reason they do those in school is to make sure the kids are reading the books and know what the plot etc are and they can’t do that verbally in a class of 30 something kids.

I think that Heather is right on the money about your daughter’s writing. Keep on encouraging her and take this passion of hers seriously.

Your photos are great!! What program do you use to edit them?

Our Fall is here and leaves are dropping but we have had nice weather all be it in the 50F and I cleaned out the wood stove today ready for our first fire.

Just a thought for Sam. You might try asking her to illustrate comic book style. For example take a Shakespeare play like “As You Like It” have her draw scenes and interpret some of the dialogue into modern English depending on the drawings she did. That way you get the art, Literature and Comprehension in an acceptable package plus an understanding of how language changes over the centuries, and words change their meanings etc. Plays are easier to interpret in this way than a book because they are broken down into scenes but the same method can be done for any of the classics.

The American flag is really a great piece of art, IMO. And can I please have a piece of pumpkin bread?

I’m finally catching up after a few days away. May I drive up for some of that pumpkin bread?

I am so looking forward to our “cool” fall days! I felt a bit inspired after passing a colorful display of mums at the market yesterday. Oh, and those caladiums? I bought several bulbs and put them in planters when I put my previous house on the market. When it sold, I moved the planters to my new house and put the bulbs in the ground. Several years later, they are growing in three different places at my house (that is now on the market). I think I’ll dig up a few bulbs and bring them to the apartment. ;)
