A memorable moment…when Miss Sam and I figured out a way to make our own Go board game and went shopping for all the ‘ingredients’.This is what happens when you make a commitment to become ‘unplugged’.
I am grateful…for WalMart. Although there are many who deem it a ‘curse’ upon American enterprise, there is no doubt that we can purchase items there cheaper than any other place in our community.
I laugh…(or rather chuckle internally) as Miss Sam takes on the role of the teacher in instructing me in how to play the game of Go. A child never seems so grown up as when the teaching tables are turned.
I love…bookstores. We visited one yesterday and of course I could not leave empty handed. The Barnes and Noble in the bigger city is going to be moving to a bigger store in March and much of their inventory is marked 30% off – which makes a good book even harder to resist.
Something new….two books (did I mention 30% off):
- The Odyssey by Homer
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (a favorite of mine)
I will celebrate…receiving an order from my photography supplier. Each delivery gets me one step closer to marketing/selling my photography.
A joyful picture from this week:

Our homemade ‘Go’ board game.
Today’s Around the Square: is the incredibly talented Mary P. Jones’ place in the blogosphere ‘A Room of Mama’s Own’. I have been reading ‘A Room of Mama’s Own’ for over two years. MPJ is truly a ‘wordsmith’ and add to that her honesty and fearlessness, well….you need to click on over there for a visit to really understand the depth of admiration I have for her.
Today I am grateful for: My screened in patio (or lanai as we Floridians so pretentiously call it). Even though I have to vacuum it and wash it down with pine cleaner as the dirt and dust from the dog’s playing field (aka the backyard) seems to seep it’s way into every corner of it. That’s my task for this Saturday morning. It was on the schedule for yesterday but we played ‘hookey’ from school and chores and went book/game shopping instead (grin).
Today I will simplify my life: by getting rid of all the ‘floppy discs’ – it amazes me how quickly they have become obsolete.

It worries me that CD’s (on which I have mega amount of information and photos stored) will go the same way. I wonder if I should be storing everything on jump drives instead?? Anyone have any advice out there about this?

I’m blushing!
I use two primary forms of backup. One is my blog where I store files that I want to make sure I don’t lose. This method is a backup to my primary backup which is a portable hard drive. They are more reliable, larger and won’t “go bad.” CDs are expected to have about a 10 year life span. Although I still put my photos on a 3rd backup of CDs, that portable hard drive is my #1.
Hugs,
Holly
OOOO! I’ll have to stop at the B&N Wed. after music lessons. When the Black Friday sales were on, we bought an external hard drive and are going to try to back-up our hard drive every month. I think that is the way it will go in the future – either that or online data backup, which you can do for about $5 a month and which we also considered.
Like Holly, we use a portable hard drive to back up everything that’s irreplaceable/irretrievable. A jump drive is good for some things, but I wouldn’t count on it: too easy to lose and too easy to “fry.” (Just ask my daughter who knows better about that.)
I don’t like Walmart because of bad experiences while living in another city. I really should give the one here a chance at proving itself. You’re right – you can certainly save money on most things.
I love Little Women too.
I also love that you are doing the “Around the Sqaure” thing now!
Let me just also tell you that I really dislike how our media so quickly becomes obsolete!!!
I finally got a JJ done! Huzzah!
What a treasure trove, books on discount!
