So there we were taking a leisurely stroll through Gander Mountain. Looking at fishing rods, lures and “big fish” supplies. As we circle around the “light spinners” to the “medium spinners” we were met by a DOG!!!! A DOG!!!! Doggone-it!!!!!!
Not just ANY old dog. But a Pit Bull. Did y’all hear me??????? A PIT BULL!!!! Now I will concede that it was on a leash and the leash WAS attached to it’s owner. HOWEVER!!!!!
And this is NOT the first time I have encountered our furry friends in stores that are not marked as “animal friendly” such as PETSMART or PET Super Stores. I have literally tripped over them in Home Depot, in Lowe’s, and yes…….a PUBLIX Supermarket (now, I think that is TOTALLY illegal but being as it was in one of those fancy, schmancy dog carriers it was TOTALLY okay????? What if it peed on my cereal box?????).
You must know me by now. I LOVE animals (well….maybe not ferrets) but especially dogs. However, I don’t want to have to start learning to drive my shopping cart around their leashes dangling in the aisles…or their drooling tongues for that matter.
Is THIS absurdity happening in anyone else’s area??? Just curious if it’s a Florida lifestyle thing.

No, I think its a phase the entire US of A is going through..its a European habit we think is cool I suppose. I’ve even seen dogs in restaurants…not in Atlanta, for sure but I’ve seen it so its probably coming…I’m with you…its ridiculous!
The town where I work passed a city ordinance that allows dogs in the outdoor dining areas of certain restaurants (those dogs that aren’t service animals). Living in a tourist town I see them everywhere too. Makes me crazy.
My word, in a Publix!!? As far as I know, any animals are illegal in a place that provides food or any other services that could be “contaminated” by animals. With the only exception being working dogs for people with challenges.
I am all for working dogs. I’ve met several and they are very well behaved and kept. But any random person toting it around in a bag or even cage, yeah… no. I’ve gotten people escorted out of stores like that for bringing in animals that could make something for myself or my son unhealthy!
I, too, love dogs although not Pit Bulls since one bit my dog Spike whom I loved so dearly.
But, no I don’t see dogs in public places because there are still laws that prohibit that in California.
And now that Jack (whom we recently rescued) and I are in obedience class, I can see why most dogs shouldn’t be in public places. Their owners are so badly behaved!
No, I haven’t seen that.
I have a friend who has a Service Dog. Most people would be stunned at the level of training these dogs must go through – and pass without a single infraction – before they are certified to be a Service Animal. Months and months and more months!
Sorry – unrelated comment again:
Hooray for Shima’s exit!
I think Jeff and Jordan are adorable together.
I haven’t seen – yet! – dogs (or cats or other critters) inside public places, with the exception of the pet stores that encourage it. I love animals, but I’m leery of strange dogs, especially big ones. I think I would have something to say to the store manager, especially if I came upon a dog in a grocery.
I’m very respectful and cautious around dogs, especially big ones, that I don’t know, but in defense of some breeds, they aren’t all bad. My son’s 3-1/2 year old pit is one of the sweetest, least-threatening dogs I know.
It’s an interesting issue because in some cases it even seems like some people advocate animal rights above human rights.
I have been seeing more small dogs in stores including the grocery store. This bothers me greatly especially since there are signs posted that no animals are allowed unless they are papered service animals (usually dogs). I love dogs and animals in general but that doesn’t mean that I will take mine into stores – with the exception of the pet stores that encourage this.
I’ve not seen larger dogs unless they were puppies that could be easily carried.
